Gas Detonation Costs Three Carabinieri While Executing Eviction Operation in Northern Italy
Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and more than a dozen additional individuals got wounded in what appears to be intentional gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.
Sequence of Events
The blast occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the house in the vicinity of Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.
The three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri military police.
Investigation Developments
A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and another man who ran away following the incident was located soon after. All three have been taken to medical facility.
The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the scene showed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.
“We are in a period of mourning,” said the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.
Background and Motive
The leader of the region of Veneto, the regional head, explained the property was facing an court order due to financial obligations accumulated by the three owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the police came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the residents triggered the detonation.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno told the media.
A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast immediately struck our officers,” he said.
Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the minister stated.
Impact Assessment
Those injured by the explosion consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of national police and a firefighter.
According to the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a poor condition and had no electricity.
The prosecutor believed the detonation had occurred on a floor above the access point and informed the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the blast, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas cylinders being opened”.
Neighbor Statements
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors informed local news, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto united with other government officials in paying tribute to the three men who had died in the performance of their duties.
