‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s journey from injury table to success with Athletic Bilbao
Thehe first time Gorka Guruzeta featured in English soil, an young playing for the reserve team against German opponents at Wycombe’s stadium in the 2015 season, he found the net. The second time he took the field in the country, against the Black Cats two months later, he converted. Another occasion, against Pep Guardiola’s team soon after, well, he did it once more. As he revisited to Manchester to face United at the sports complex in 2017, he did it once more. An excellent finish, also. “In fact,” he states, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve ever scored.” So Athletic did what was necessary: they took him off.
“I got well angry,” the forward says, before breaking into laughter. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I was in fine form. They didn’t let me play the final 45 minutes: my contract wasn’t finalized my contract, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I came across reports about Man United, standard transfer gossip. It’s unclear how true it was, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at Athletic. I’m fortunate to be here.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At the facility, Bilbao, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; after it, the brief trip to Loiu airport and a further journey to England, now to take on the Magpies in the UCL on midweek. Mentioning that phrase makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a challenging campaign for the team, partly because of the requirements of their participation. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have secured just a single victory of their past eight league games and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in Europe. But, consider the broader view, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.
In the the period since he had returned to the club, Gorka has been a final four contender in Europe, denied at the last hurdle the showpiece event by the English giants, and has ridden an historic vessel through the waterway flanked by a huge crowd after winning the Copa del Rey, the first title in 40 years. Currently he stands as the top goal-getter in the Champions League, where they are distinctive and making their first appearance in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.
He considered it hard enough just to make the first team and he was right. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player his father and a dedicated fan at the club that are now his rivals, Guruzeta is a product of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that developed Mikel Arteta, the legendary midfielder and Andoni Iraola. He signed for Athletic at seventeen but after making his senior debut in August 2018, he suffered a torn cruciate, dropped, a drop in category and a recall before he could truly get a chance, returning at 26 to enjoy the highlights of the club’s history.
“You go into the academy not expecting to reach the senior squad but with every stage you go through you’re persisting and you can observe the approach. You arrive and then … you’re sent away.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in half a dozen appearances between his bow and early 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches there and I tear my cruciate.
“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the way I saw things. The rehabilitation process is difficult, but it aids growth. You adopt practices you didn’t have. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I attended practice and then return home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, you have everything, so do everything. Work, precaution. Strength training. If your hips aren’t balanced, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, make it a 12 or a 14. All those ‘silly things’: do them.
“In the first team you’re going to collide with opponents who have been in battles repeatedly. Highly robust. Reviewing old images: my physique was slight. So what happens, happens. Present-day images and the change is dramatic. The setback taught me. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Everyone else is ready, really ready; the same applies.”
You also have to play. Guruzeta departed upset in the pandemic season, in his early twenties, moving to a lower level. During his Sabadell spell in the 20-21 campaign, he netted three goals in numerous matches. During his Amorebieta stint in the latter part of the season, the goals started to flow. “Many experience this: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, work, believe, and if one day the requirement appears for your role, recall is possible. You have to be ready. When they decided to call again, it was a dream come true. The trophy success, play in Europe, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. All the more so after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was about endurance. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
